Ontario Fire Code Changes 2026

As part of Onyx Fire Protection’s continued commitment to industry leadership and safety excellence, we want to inform our valued clients about an important regulatory change that will affect all building owners and property managers across Ontario: the adoption of the CAN/ULC-S536:19 Standard for the inspection and testing of fire alarm systems, effective January 1, 2026.

What Is CAN/ULC-S536:19?

The CAN/ULC-S536:19 Standard is the latest version of the national standard governing how fire alarm systems must be inspected and tested. It replaces the previous 2004 edition, and includes substantial updates that reflect

  • Advancements in fire alarm technology
  • New industry practices
  • Greater detail in inspection procedures
  • A stronger focus on component-level performance

The intent of the updated standard is clear: to make inspections more thorough, more reliable, and ultimately safer for everyone. However, with this new level of rigor comes additional inspection time and more intensive testing requirements. This update to the Fire Code marks a significant shift in how fire alarm inspections are conducted, and it brings Ontario in line with updated practices already in place across much of Western and Central Canada.

Why Will Inspections Take Longer and Cost More?

It’s important to understand that no two fire alarm systems are exactly the same. Each system is custom-designed to suit the building’s size, layout, occupancy, and function. Some systems are relatively simple; others involve complex networks of devices, integrated components, and building automation. Under the new standard:

  • Each component must be inspected more thoroughly than before
  • Additional checks, diagnostics, and documentation are now mandatory
  • Systems with more devices, zones, or custom configurations will naturally take longer to test

As a result, inspection times will increase across the board—and for many clients, this means a general cost increase of approximately 25–35% should be expected and budgeted for your 2026 inspections.
