About the position
Overall, the primary responsibility of a sprinkler designer is to develop safe and efficient fire protection systems that protect lives and property in the event of a fire.
Key Responsibilities
System Design:
- Designing fire protection systems compliant with local building codes, insurance standards, and industry regulations
- Analyzing building plans to identify potential fire hazards
- Determining the optimal location and type of sprinklers
- Calculating water flow and pressure requirements
System Layout:
- Creating detailed layout plans for the sprinkler system, indicating equipment placement
- Considering factors such as building layout, occupancy type, ceiling height, and potential obstructions for effective water distribution
Hydraulic Calculations:
- Performing hydraulic calculations for water flow, pressure, and pipe sizing
- Considering factors such as pipe length, elevation changes, friction loss, and water supply capabilities
Material and Equipment Selection:
- Selecting suitable materials, sprinkler heads, pipes, fittings, and other components
- Considering factors such as the type of occupancy, anticipated fire hazards, and local regulations
Coordination with Other Disciplines:
- Collaborating with architects, engineers, contractors, and others involved in the construction or renovation process
- Coordinating designs with other building systems for compatibility and integration
Code Compliance:
- Staying updated with local, national, and international fire protection codes and standards
- Ensuring designs meet safety standards and obtaining necessary permits and approvals
Documentation and Drawings:
- Preparing detailed drawings, specifications, and documentation for the sprinkler system design
- Creating documents for reference during installation, inspections, and maintenance
Collaboration and Communication:
- Working closely with clients, project managers, contractors, and other stakeholders
- Addressing design challenges and ensuring the system meets expectations and project timelines
Site Visits and Inspections:
- Visiting construction sites to verify installation compliance with design plans
- Providing guidance to the installation team
- Participating in inspections and tests of the completed system to ensure proper functionality
Qualifications
- Customer service focused experience in a B2B environment preferred
- Experience in fire protection or mechanical/electrical contracting a definite asset
- Effective verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to handle and execute on multiple priorities simultaneously
- Strong organizational, time management and leadership skills
- Proven track record in account management and client retention
